Regulation

The Family Mediation Council (FMC) is the governing body for family mediation

in England and Wales. The Council sits within the Ministry of Justice.

There are five membership bodies of the FMC,

and every accredited mediator must belong to one of these five bodies.

Being regulated ensures that we have insurance,

our continuous professional development is monitored

and we abide by the FMC code of conduct.

The five membership bodies are:

  • College of Mediators

  • National Family Mediation

  • Family Mediators Association

  • The Law Society

  • Resolution

Please be aware that anyone can trade as a family mediator.

Family mediators do not have to belong to the FMC.

But, in such circumstances, is the mediator insured?

Do they follow a code of conduct?

What is their complaints procedure?

How are they regulated?
